To the audience of Live Earth, 7/7/2007
Good afternoon. Are you having a good time? I bring you an important message.
In 1992, at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, a truly eloquent 13 year old girl, Severn Cullis-Suzuki, said these prophetic words:
“I have no hidden agenda, I am fighting for my future … Losing my future is not like losing an election or a few points on the stock-market. I am speaking for all generations to come… I am here to speak on behalf of the starving children around the world whose cries go unheard.” She said, “In my life I have dreamt of seeing great herds of animals, jungle and rainforests full of birds and butterflies, but now I wonder if they will even exist for my children to see.”
15 years have passed and things have not gotten better. In fact, they have got much worse. Since time immemorial, every generation has been responsible for the survival of subsequent generations. Unfortunately, this ancient law has been forgotten: We are over fishing the oceans, destroying the rainforests, depleting our water supplies, polluting the air, and we are causing climate change - leaving our children and grand children the threat of unparalleled disaster.
We need to make sure that politicians, business leaders, and all of us, understand the enormous responsibility we have towards future generations. The solutions to most of our problems are available, but what is missing are courage and political will to make the necessary decisions. This is particularly true now in an age in which we face the threat of catastrophic climate change!
Yet, it is still possible to take action and to pass laws to prevent the worst.
Today the World Future council its launching The KidsCall campaign to give children and young people a platform to address the political leaders who will make the decisions that will affect their future. I am here on behalf of the World Future Council to invite children from all over the world to write to world leaders urging them to take the right measures to protect life on earth and to prevent climate chaos. The WFC will become the postman that will collect these letters, I hope you will be sending thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, hopefully millions of letters that we will then deliver to the G8 summit in Japan in exactly one year’s time. |
